Why is it so hard to lose weight over 50?

Menopause can cause us to gain much more weight than we did in our younger days and we will find it harder to lose weight over 50. Hormones, decreasing metabolism, menopause, loss of muscle mass all cause problems when it comes to weight loss over 50.

So how do we lose weight over 50? My approach is very different from Pahla Bowers:

Here are my four top tips:

1. Build our metabolism with strength training over 50. You won’t get bulky!

2. Use High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to burn fat. If you can’t do jumping there are low impact forms of HIIT like rowing or follow along HIIT programs.

3. Diet: Eat good quality lean protein and carbohydrates to build metabolism and good fats to balance fluctuating hormones and deal with menopause and perimenopause symptoms. No sugar, no alcohol.

4. Mindset, prioritising consistency, planning and organising – meal prep, diary in your workout schedule.

    My problem is rheumatoid arthritis in my knees and hands. It’s very painful. I love to exercise and the RA is a major hindrance.

    I am glad I found you. I am 56 and love to watch workout videos, but most of the ladies I watch are young. I do strength training and cardio at home as I need to wait until there is a low case load of the virus to return to the gym. Thank you for sharing an at home workout.

    IΒ΄m 43, an Argentinian mountaineer, though amateur. In long hikes I usually carry a 30kg backpack. In a pair of occasions I carried up to 50kg. for hours above 4000masl. When I was waying 64kg that was OK, but now IΒ΄ve gained 20kg and I REALLY NEED TO KEEP STRONG AND LOSE WEIGHT.

    Hi Melissa! EXCELLENT video ! I was online trying to figure out why bloating has become a MAJOR issue for me . I eat clean and eliminate regularly so my extreme bloating was not making sense. Thanks to your video , I now know it's due to excessively low progesterone ( I am estrogen dominant)and low testosterone…your a lifesaver and thank you ! πŸ’šπŸ’›

    Great video Melissa! Do you think perhaps consistency is less about motivation and more about habit and routine? I don't enjoy cleaning, but I do it because I don't want to live in a dirty house. Likewise, I'm rarely highly motivated to work out. I do it because I don't want the consequences that come from being out of shape.

    Awesome I'm 53 and a bodybuilder. Protein, creatine, multivitamin, b complex. Sometimes d and e. And a strict macro tracking bodybuilding diet. Lift heavy 5 days a week. Now I'm on a cut so a lot of booty band work and things like steps ups and lunges. There is a dearth of information for bikini bodybuilders our age. Even harder to find coaches.

    I was doing so well doing combat and the gym before lockdown but now my stamina has really gone and struggling to do any cardio 😣 love your videos very infomative and thanks for the downloads 😊
